Four essential things you need for a successful day at the racetrack:

1) A Program
2) A Racing Form
3) Pencil
4) and of course some Money

The art of picking winners is called handicapping. One other essential piece of equipment that you’re going to need is the daily the facing form.
The facing form is called the horseplayer’s bible. It contains all the information you could possibly need to make a successful bet.
For example if you wanted to bet on the #3 horse, it would tell you the age of the horse, the mother and father. It would also tell you how the horse has done in its career.
One main thing to look for is success at the distance. i.e. How the horse has performed at the distance you are betting at. For example, if the race were a mile and 1/16th, you’d look to see how that horse has performed at this distance in the past.

Something else that’s important to look at is what’s called the buyer speed figure. Its a number complied by researchers that tells you how the horse has done in its most recent starts. The higher the number, the better.

Now for the betting.

There are several types of bets you can make when you’re at the racetrack.

1) There’s the simple straight wagering called win, place or show
Win – you gotta pick the winner
Place – your horse has to finish 1st or second
Show – your horse has to come in 1st 2nd or 3rd and you can still collect.

There are also exotic bets:
Exactors – You have to pick the horse that comes in first and second in order. Triactor – You have to pick the horse that comes in first, second and third in order.
When placing exotic bets, there are several things you can do to help you increase your odds of winning:
1) The wheel – you’d select one horse to win and all other horses to come in second, you’d “wheel” the horses at the bottom.
2) Exactor Box – You’d pick horses, for example #3,4,5 and box all three of them. If they come in any order 1,2,3, you’d collect.

Once you’ve made your decision, you simply put your voucher into the betting machine, make your selection, place a wager and you’re good to go.
If a little birdie tells you that you’ve bet on the wrong horse, don’t worry, you’re allowed to change your mind anytime before the race start.

One last thing to keep in mind, there’s a saying around the track: “There’s a thousand ways to loose a race but only one way to win it.”
